About Katia

I’m Katia Shank, M.S., CCC-SLP, a neurodiversity affirming speech-language pathologist from Torrance, CA. I received my bachelors degree in Linguistics from UCLA and my masters degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders from Chapman University. I have always enjoyed working with the pediatric population and learning how languages work. When I was studying linguistics in college, I discovered the field of Speech-Language Pathology and haven’t looked back since. I combine my detail-oriented analytic skills from my linguistics degree with my knowledge of children’s speech and language development to best support my clients. Additionally I speak beginner Mandarin and Japanese and work with families to incorporate their home language into our sessions.

I specialize in speech sound disorders, early intervention, and gestalt language processing. My trainings and certifications include:

  • Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing (DTTC) for Childhood Apraxia of Speech

  • Prompts for Restructuring Oral Muscular Phonetic Targets (PROMPT)

  • Complexity Approach for phonological disorders

  • Orofacial myofunctional therapy

  • Natural Language Acquisition framework for gestalt language processing

  • Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) apps

Outside of being an SLP, I enjoy trying new recipes, baking treats, and exploring the outdoors.
